FREELAND

"I get frustrated when I hear a great track which is let down by shallow meaningless lyrics"

Es gibt nur wenig Produzenten elektronischer Musik, die soviel zu sagen haben wie Adam Freeland. Und wenn schon niemand seine Platten kauft, kann er wenigstens was dazu sagen.

Where did you take the line "go back to bed, your government is in control again" from?

That line is a sample from one of my all time heroes Bill Hicks, a comedian from the USA. I'd highly recommend checking out his stuff. He put out a few albums and videos. He's dead now.

These days most dance music you hear does not have any meaning at all, it's just lalala or completely lyric free. "We Want Your Soul" appears to me to combine a proper dancefloor tune with real content. How important is (lyrical) content in modern dance music?

Dance music is traditionally about escapism and largely instrumental, so I don't think initially there was much place for social commentary in there. But I think 10 -15 years down the line the world has changed. A lot of my favourite music is instrumental but I get frustrated when I hear a great track which is let down by shallow meaningless lyrics. I wanted to have lyrics on my album so I just ended up writing about the things that are important to me. "We Want Your Soul" for example is a frustrated rant about a force fed culture where you constantly brainwashed into feeling you can't be complete without consuming all this crap you don't need.

What's the story behind the album title "Now And Them"? And who is "them" anyway?

Well there's a lot of different ideas on the album. "We Want Your Soul" and "Mind Killer" are more about 'them', whereas tracks like, "Physical World", "Reality 3d" and "Nowism" are exploring ideas about the path to happiness being the ability to live right here in the present moment, 'the now', rather than always chasing some future goal which you have decided or been told will be the point when you will be happy.

How do you like people to look at your album in retrospective, say in three years?

It still sounds fresh and original.

Describe your inner self in three words!

Positive, hectic dreamer.

Your favourite B-side?

Run DMC "Rok Da Bells (Instrumental)".
