Wenn man sich neuerdings durch die Musiklandschaften Englands und Nordamerikas hört, beginnen sich ein ums andere Mal die Horizonte zu verschieben. Während auf der Insel der wilde Rock gefeiert wird, entdeckt man in Übersee die Vorzüge von Popmusik. The Stills sind da neben Interpol und kleineren Acts wie The Meeting Places ein vortreffeliches Beispiel. Gäbe es nicht die obligatorischen Informationen im CD-Booklet, würde man felsenfest davon überzeugt sein, es mit einer britischen Band zu tun zu haben. Doch wie gesagt, die Horizonte verschieben sich und mit ihnen wohl oder übel auch die Rezeptionsmuster. So fährt das Quartett aus Montreal auf seinem Debütalbum mit 12 Songs auf, die die Melancholie der Mit- bis Spätachtziger versprühen. Gitarrenmusik, wie sie unter den Rädern von Grunge und Britpop versandet ist, so dass sie erst von der nachfolgenden Generation wiederentdeckt werden konnte. Dass diese Form der Wiederauferstehung nicht notwendig im stumpfen Plagiat enden muss, haben Bands wie Interpol (Joy Division) oder Radio 4 (The Clash) bewiesen. Und auch The Stills neigen trotz zahlreicher Reminiszenzen dazu, ihr eigenes Süppchen zu kochen. Vermutlich hat man noch einiges von ihnen zu erwarten.
Congratulations on a wonderful album. Is this the sound of Montreal?
Tim Fletcher (Gesang, Gitarre): Ummm…everybody's been telling us that it's the
sound of Britain but I'd still say that Montreal is a very romantic/melancholy
city (it's the winter, I guess) and a lot of the music that comes from here
is very romantic/melancholy…(Rufus Wainwright, Godspeed You Black Emperor! The
Dears, Leonard Cohen…etc.)
The music reminds me of a highly influential period of British guitar pop.
So what about your musical background?
I used to listen to a lot of that stuff so I'm not surprised that it rubbed
off.
There has been a massive retro movement during the last years. Where do
you see the future potential of contemporary guitar-music?
Hopefully, with time, we will become the future of contemporary "rock" music.
Would you consider yourselves as melancholic persons?
Yes and no so…yes!
What does being in a band mean to you?
Touring, interviews, pressure, disenchantment, excitement, glorious, passionate
and sometimes boring-just like life.
How come you recorded the album in New York? Is there anything special about
the studio?
Yes it was very inexpensive.
Logic Will Break Your Heart came out in 2003. Have you been working on new
material since then?
Yes, that's what we're doing right now and it's very exciting.
What is your favorite song on the album? Why?
I think "Lola" is my favorite song on the album just because I think it's the
best one.
Name your favorite Single-B-side of anyone ever.
"Polyethylene part 1" by Radiohead.
